If you want meaningful and long-term results from Reddit marketing, it take commitment. If you are not ready to make that commitment, do these three things today to secure your future on the Reddit platform.

1. Start monitoring Reddit.

You do not even need a Reddit account to do this. Use a tool like TrackReddit to receive email notifications when you or your brand is mentioned on Reddit. This will keep you in the loop on what is being said about you on Reddit and let you know when it is time to take Reddit seriously. If you do not want to spend money on a tracking tool like TrackReddit, set a reminder on your calendar to visit Reddit once a month to search for mentions of your brand and other related keywords.

2. Create a Reddit account.

Surprisingly, this is not the most important action you should take. Most people are afraid that someone else might take their username, but usernames on Reddit are relatively unimportant compared to Twitter or a website domain. What is important is the age of your Reddit account because older accounts have less restrictions when it comes to posting and commenting.

Try to get a username that matches your other social media accounts as well as usernames for important members of your team. Accounts for team members should include the name of your business and their first name.

3. Create a subreddit.

Subreddits are the communities where posts live on Reddit. Many businesses have subreddits entirely dedicated to their business or a popular product. By grabbing the subreddit that matches your business name or the names of your popular products, you have the option to use them as an official community for your audience.

If your name is already taken, find out what is going on in the subreddit and maybe there is already a growing community that you can contribute to. If your subreddit name is being used for an unrelated purpose, choose the next best name that is available.

Bonus:
It is possible that someone has created a subreddit with the name you want but has since “abandoned” it (i.e. the moderator has been inactive on Reddit for 60 days). In this case, you can put in a request to claim the subreddit at reddit.com/r/redditrequest (read the sidebar before making a request).

Keep in mind that you will need to maintain activity on Reddit or someone else could claim it is abandoned and make a request. If you want to indefinitely guarantee the security of your subreddit, you will need to login to Reddit every 60 days and comment or submit a post.

TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)

You may not be ready to jump into Reddit marketing, but you should take a few basic actions to secure your future opportunities to engage the Reddit community: 1) Start periodically checking Reddit for mentions of you or your brand. 2) Create Reddit usernames for your brand and key team members. 3) Create a subreddit for your brand and popular products.
